The crystal clear water, the white lime of the houses, the charm of tradition. Lineablu stops in Favignana, the main one of the Egadi islands, for an unmissable episode of history, traditions and environment. Ancient images, like those of the tuna fishery, which returns to sea after many years. A symbol of the Egadi that lives again, a symbol of sustainable fishing of one of the most precious and appreciated species in the Mediterranean: red tuna. Economy, turismo, tradition, these are the prospects of the only tuna fishery in Sicily. Donatella Bianchi will tell the story, Then, the historical importance of this small archipelago to the west of Sicily, in the geopolitical structure of the entire Mediterranean basin. It's here, indeed, that the victory over the Carthaginians at the end of the First Punic War sanctioned the dominion of the Romans over the Mare Nostrum. A naval battle that influenced the history of the West. A legendary clash that Sebastiano Tusa, renowned archaeologist, he had studied for a long time. Superintendent of the sea of ​​the Sicily Region, Tusa disappeared in the plane crash in Ethiopia last March. Illustrious friend of Lineablu, the Egadi episode will be an opportunity to remember the archaeologist and relive the epic of one of the most famous naval battles in history.

The island of Marettimo, Hiera for the ancients, the sacred island, the most extreme and uncontaminated of the Egadi archipelago. The grandeur of the island emerging from crystal clear waters, the breathtaking backdrops, the uncontaminated woods, all immersed in centuries of history. Navigating the Marine Protected Area, undisputed reign of the monk seal until a few decades ago, it will be possible to see the exclusive images of his return to Marettimo, documented and commented by the technical-scientific team coordinated by Giulia Mo, of Ispra. The return of the most threatened marine mammal in the Mediterranean is an important signal of the new sensitivity of local communities towards an animal, disappeared from the Egadi at the end of the years 70, because hunted by man. A now widespread trend in Italy is that of crossings and swimming feats. In the Marine Protected Area “Egadi Islands” was established on “Blue Mile”, a protected lane reserved for open water swimming enthusiasts, who can play sports there in complete safety. Lineablu's underwater cameras will dive into the depths of Punta Mugnone, a paradise for divers, with its submerged rocks and its natural inlets, perfect habitat for many species of fish. As we circumnavigate the island we will visit the many caves that make the morphology of Marettimo so characteristic. Natural scenography that bears witness to a changing planet. An open book for geologists, an attraction for tourists. Stories collected in the Sea Museum, a small but precious museum, managed by the CSRT Association “Marettimo”, born by will of the inhabitants of the island, with the aim of protecting the identity of Marettimo. The historical and cultural memories of the island are kept there. Fabio Gallo meets a world sailing legend for Lineablu, Mauro Pelaschier, the famous sailor who is taking a tour of Italy from Trieste to Genoa to raise awareness of the protection of the sea.


⇒ BLUE LINE

White stone and crystal clear water: welcome to Favignana. Donatella Bianchi's journey continues on the most beautiful coasts and islands of our peninsula. The Lineablu cameras visit Favignana and her younger sister, Levanzo, Sicilian islands included in the province of Trapani. With an expert in the marine protected area, we will go to discover the places of the monk seal, one of the rarest and most protected mammals in the Mediterranean. A few months ago it was spotted in the waters of the Egadi Islands: caves and ravines on the coast are ideal places for his return. In the waters of the seaside village Linea blu will meet the kids from the sailing school who, since the age of six, they are measured with tacks and jibes: Thus began learning the art of sailing driven only by the wind. Favignana is synonymous with tuna fishery: we will visit the factory where tuna has been processed for decades and the project that aims to reopen the tuna factory will be illustrated. Favignana is one “smart Island”: here attention to the environment is a priority, we try to limit the use of plastic and polluting emissions. Donatella Bianchi, with the mayor of Favignana, will discover these good practices while riding a bicycle. Finally, Blue Line will visit the fish market on the port of Favignana, to discover the fish species that fuel the local fishing economy and enrich the tables of these islands. Blue line moves to another Egadi island, Levanzo. The smallest of the archipelago, just five square kilometers of surface area.


⇒ Geo: Marettimo

Marettimo is the most distant of the Egadi islands, the wildest, granitic, which rises above the emerald sea. E’ an island of fishermen who, albeit contaminated by modern times, keeps its roots and traditions firm.

Geo hosts Stefano Donati, Director of the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area, to understand how beached Posidonia is managed in Italy, thanks to the project “Medonia Lab”. The phenomenon involves the 60 % of the coastal countries of the Mediterranean Sea with serious inconveniences for seaside tourism.

⇒ Green Line Horizons

In the episode of Linea Verde Orizzonti we will visit the pearl of the Egadi islands: Favignana. Federico Quaranta will circumnavigate the island to describe the natural beauty of one of the largest marine reserves in Europe. Then we will see the agricultural vocation of the island which preserves some traditions such as the breeding of the Sicilian bee and a particular breed of cows that graze freely on the greenery of the uncontaminated coast. We will also know the secrets of the production of Marsala aged in gigantic centuries-old barrels and in San Vito lo Capo we will reveal the secrets for the preparation of fish-based couscous. Chiara Giallonardo will visit the ancient tuna fishery of Favignana with an exceptional witness, the ultimate Rais, who will describe the tuna slaughter that was practiced up to seven years ago; a bloody and often criticized peach, but considered a real resource for the inhabitants of the Sicilian island. The journey will continue to discover the underground gardens, true earthly paradises created inside the abandoned calcarenite quarries. The nice meeting with the last quarryman and the preparation of the delicacies “waterfalls” conclude the journey of this episode of Linea Verde Orizzonti.
