Archeology: Levanzo found the 12th rostrum used by one of the ships in the Battle of the Egadi

The campaign of underwater research is conducted in collaboration with the GUE, former Florio of the trap of Favignana, Amp Aegadian, the Museums of Trapani, ROAN the Naval Air Operations Department of the Financial Police and the Municipality of Favignana.

An expedition result of an international collaboration between the Superintendence of the Sea of ​​the Sicilian Region and the GUE - Global Underwater Explorer, He has dived in already the subject of findings in recent years by the RPM Nautical Foundation.

The GUE team, under the scientific coordination of the Superintendent of the Sea, He made with two teams of divers diving exploration of bathymetric ranging from 75 to 90 meters.

Having documented the rostrum "Egadi 9" already identified in 2012 by RPM Nautical Foundation and awaiting recovery, Research continued in a systematic manner on the same distribution area where he was found the new beak. The bronze artifact, is lying on the bottom and presents intact and in excellent condition.
A few meters from the rostrum was found a bronze helmet of Montefortino type that is in addition to the eight other found and recovered in previous research surveys.

It 'was then carried out by divers positioning of the exhibits and photographic video documentation. Also for the first time photographers of Global Underwater Explorer they have created a three-dimensional photogrammetry of the rostrum in the place of occurrence.

It then obtained a high-resolution 3D model of great visual impact, but very useful for the first scientific analysis.

The recovery of the artifacts was already planned for the month of October 2017.

The perfect synergy between the Superintendent of the Sea and GUE - Global Underwater Explorer continues to give excellent results. Already in 2014 and 2015 from this collaboration came remarkable results from explorations carried out to the Aeolian Islands which have been investigated deep ancient shipwrecks in the depths of Panarea and Lipari.

These latest findings add to the many made in the past in this stretch of sea between Levanzo and Marettimo which allowed to exactly locate the site where you fought one of the greatest naval battles of antiquity by number of participants, circa 200 thousand, among the Romans, guided by Gaio Lutatius Catulo, and the Carthaginians, led by Hanno, is that, in addition to closing in favor of the first long and lacerating First Punic War, sanctioned the supremacy of Rome over Carthage.

They returned to the authentic light fragments of ancient history in the form of twelve bronze beaks of ancient warships, nove scientific bronzei, hundreds of amphorae and common artifacts.
